Seven teams had entered for this year’s competition, divided into a group of 4 with teams captained by Rob Davies with “The Archbishop’s Rejects”, Big T with “The Six Men”, Macca with “Hopeful at Best” and Simon Canter with “At a Canter” and a group of 3 with teams captained by Baz with “Barrington’s Phats & Small (BP&S), Tom Leaver with “The Saltwood Smashers” and Trev 1 with “The Mighty Mallards”. With a very tight schedule and the hope that we were not playing in the dark come the final, play got underway at 10am.
Group wise, the A/Rejects beat H at Best and the 6 Men, the 6 Men beat H at Best and At a Canter, At a Canter beat the A/Rejects and H at Best beat At a Canter meaning that the 6 Men and A/Rejects went through to the Semis. In the other group BP&S beat The S/Smashers and the M/Mallards, and the S/Smashers beat the M/Mallards- this pair also played the play-off match also won by the S/smashers which meant that BP&S and the S/Smashers were the other semi finalists. In the semis BP&S beat the A/Rejects and the S/Smashers beat the 6 Men and so come the final it was the Colts versus the Coaches.
BP&S batted first racking up a respectable 57 for 2 Cowelo being run out and Jez falling to the final ball. Biff would be key to the S/Smashers innings but his fine batting throughout the day was curtailed by Roachy who bowled him for 2 in the 1st over. Matt was c&b by Baz for 1 next over and Joey had Tom caught for a duck by Cowelo. Cowelo didn’t actually take a wicket but Jez accounted for both Arthur, caught behind for 9, and Doug, bowled for 1 and the S/Smashers finished on 19 for 5. So we crowned new Champions this year as Baz was presented with the Partridge Cup. A great day as usual with thanks to Big T for the organisation and to all those who played, helped and supported on the day raising in excess of £200 for club funds – see you all again next year.
