After a week of rain it was nice to see the sun returning for our match against Herne Bay CC. Cowlo lost the toss and Saltwood were put in to bat against the opening pair of Beeson and Gillard. With Jeremy (4) still banned from the cut shot until 1st June he decided to use his pads instead but found that standing right in front of the stumps was not a good plan of action.
Grenville worked hard with the middle order but we were unable to get a decent partnership together with Dan C (10) and Arthur (15) falling cheaply. Matt Brady (30) helped the tail’s only performing batsman to get us up to a decent score. Owen Reed (96*) will no doubt talk you through his innings at great length and some thanks should go to Andy Williamson who was doing a good job to hold up his end while Reedy tucked into the bowling with some 6s and 4s around the ground. The Wood ended up with a more than respectable 247 for 9 off 46 overs with ‘Extras’ chipping in with 46.
After a superb tea by Grenville & Family, the Wood’s bowlers set about the task of defending the total and taking all 10 wickets for maximum points. Roots went in the first over with Andrew Alder following soon after, leaving Beeson & Hall to steady the ship for Herne Bay. Once Matt Brady had bowled Beeson round his legsĀ for 40 and Hall was caught by Cowlo off the bowling of Reedy for 32 the remaining Herne Bay batmen weren’t able to get any momentum, ending up on 121 all out in the 38th over. A good game with a nice bunch of lads from HB.
